"Bracebridge
was named for the book "Bracebridge Hall" by Washington
Irving. Someone in the Post Office had been reading it at the time
the name of North Falls was to be made into a Post Office."
from Beatrice Scovell, The Muskoka Story
Bracebridge
Falls
Once called North Falls, a foaming torrent near the main street of
town, harnessed for municipal power. Alongside you will find
Bracebridge Hydro Generating Station. Bracebridge, Muskoka was the
first town in Ontario to have its own hydro generating station,
built in 1894.

The Birds Mill
Mews, at the Silver Bridge where it crosses the Muskoka
River, was an integral part of the Bird Woolen Mill,
established by Henry J. Bird in 1872. The building was used
to store woolen products. Soon after World War I, the
warehouse was shut down and remained virtually untouched
until 1994, when it was completely revitalized and renovated
by the Town of Bracebridge. The roof was raised, all windows
replaced and enlarged, a side entrance and rear decks were
added and a walkway, under the railroad bridge, to nearby
parking was added in 1995.
Picturesque walkways
were also added, completing the walking tour around
the Falls and Bracebridge Bay area, including the circa.
1894 pumping station, Kelvin Grove Park, a beach, and fully
equipped picnic areas. Directly in front of the building is
a well appointed parquet for your resting and sight-seeing
pleasure, while enjoying the landscape and wildflowers.
