Community Information

Collingwood is strategically located on the shores of Georgian Bay a short 75 min. drive from Toronto.
and is a Premier Ranked Tourist Destination by the Ministry of Tourism. Visit the web site.
www.tourism.gov.on.ca

Collingwood is located on the southern shore of Georgian Bay and at the foot of Ontario’s highest ski hill, Blue Mountain, in the heart of one of Ontario’s most attractive year-round recreation and tourist destinations. Recently, the Town has
focused on establishing itself as a four-season tourist area, as people from all over come to enjoy the natural assets of beautiful Georgian Bay, and ski on some of the best Alpine hills in Ontario. Over the last two decades, the Town has experienced a population explosion almost doubling its size to approximately 21,500 residents. On weekends and throughout the summer and winter months, the Town enjoys a large influx of tourists - especially for its outstanding special events.

Businesses in Collingwood benefit from the large number of visitors who are sun-seekers, fishermen, cottagers and skiers who come to visit their shops. The small town atmosphere is maintained while residents enjoy many amenities that would not be available in other small towns, such as a large selection of well-known department and grocery stores. Efforts in the private sector to expand the marina potential, to introduce timesharing and to expand the vacation home component within the town, have provided a welcoming environment to the many individuals who enjoy escaping to the Town’s natural setting and relaxed pace.

Collingwood is a major business and professional centre between Barrie and Owen Sound and is well equipped to look after the needs of residents, tourists and those living in the surrounding communities. Collingwood is a 75-minute drive from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (approx. 104 km).

The two major highways that run through Collingwood are Highways #124 and #26. Both are connecting links to Highway 400, 401, 427 and 407. In addition, the Collingwood Municipal Airport is equipped with a 5,000 feet, jet capable, paved runway. The Airport also has a port of entry status and the services of Canada Customs.

One of our most valuable resources is water Collingwood’s Public Utilities provides us with an unlimited supply of ultra pure membrane filtered water. The Raymond A. Barker Ultra-filtration Plant is a State of the Art facility that supplies water to the Town as well as surrounding Municipalities.

The fundamental site location advantages inherent in Collingwood’s proximity to Toronto and Ontario’s major automotive/manufacturing centres combined with lower production costs plus Collingwood’s lifestyle is a definite attribute that distinguishes
this community from other competing locations in Ontario for recruiting and retaining key industries and employees. In fact, Canada leads G7 in cost competitiveness. A study by K.P.M.G., entitled “Competitive Alternatives-Comparing business costs in N.A., Europe & Japan” in 2001 ranks Canada as cheaper to do business in than their U.S. Counterparts by 10 to 20%. UNUSUAL WEATHER CONDITIONS Lake Huron and Georgian Bay modify the temperatures in the surrounding shores, dramatically affecting the climate of Collingwood. The “Lake Effect” generally causes cooler temperatures along the shores of the lake during summer and milder temperatures in the winter. The overall moderating effect is that there are more frost-free days than what is found at similar latitudes. Another key aspect of the “Lake Effect” is the amount and type of snowfall experienced in areas to the lee of the lakes during the winter months. Brief, blinding snow squalls are punctuated intermittently by periods of brilliant sunshine. The snowfall extends only 30-40 km inland. Areas close to the lakes, such as Collingwood, may experience heavy snowfalls, but inland areas seem to escape the brunt of these storms.
